Sunday 1st December is your day to plant trees in the local countryside in Laughton. Laughton Greenwood is one of the only community-run woods in Sussex. Volunteers will be planting up to 400 saplings in the wood, and lots of support is needed.
With the Climate Crisis causing floods & wildfires around the world it is easy to feel powerless. You recycle your bottles, but what could you do that is long-lasting?
“Planting trees is such a great thing to do” says Steve Lewis, one of the volunteers. “These trees will provide a haven for birds & butterflies for decades to come. Trees store carbon, so mitigate the climate crisis. And as long as the wood remains in community hands these trees will be there for our children and grandchildren to play and enjoy nature.”
The Family Tree Planting Day will be attended by our MP and local councillors.
All are welcome – no experience is needed.
The day is free, but please register online here so we know how many people to expect.
There will be pre-Christmas activities for children with art & crafts. Volunteers should come prepared for the December weather, with drinks and lunch etc. There will be soup at lunchtime. If you can bring a spade please do, but the most important thing is to come anyway.
Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
Sessions begin at 10am and 1pm, or just come when you can.
“Laughton has some of the best ‘Ancient Woodland’ remaining in the UK” says Debbie Pellett who grew up locally. “But after the war, large areas were cut down and replaced with conifers. Little by little we aim to re-plant traditional English woodland trees such as hazel, beech and the mighty oak.”
One of the best things about living in Sussex is that we are surrounded by lovely countryside. But hedgerows have been cut down all over the country and habitats for our natural wildlife are shrinking. The UK only has 14% of woodland cover, while most of Europe has over 30%. Join in on 1st December to plant some trees for the wildlife and for future generations.
“We are lucky to have been donated the saplings, says Olivier, a member of the committee. “Most of the trees have come from The Woodland Trust, and the oak trees were grown from acorns from Sheffield Park, in a back-garden in Lewes. Now we just need enough people to plant them, please join us on the day.”
